Seven Decades of Friendship and Cultural Exchange
Founded in April 1955, more than eighty years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Japan, the Japan Swiss Society stands as the first institution ever created for the purpose of associating Swiss and Japanese people and fostering friendship and exchanges of culture between them. In 2025, the Society proudly celebrated its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of strengthening the cordial relations between these two nations.
A Legacy of Shared Values
The Japan Swiss Society was established with a clear and enduring purpose: the cultivation of mutual friendship and exchange of culture between the peoples of Japan and Switzerland. Shared ideals, such as those of Henri Dunant—Swiss founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross—serve as an important driver and frequent topic of discussion within the Society. This connection to humanitarian values runs deep, reflected in the Society’s continued partnership with the Japanese Red Cross Society.
An Exclusive International Community
Today, the Japan Swiss Society has evolved into one of the most exclusive societies in Tokyo. Comprised of a large number of individual members and corporate members of both nationalities, the Society has distinguished itself as a leading member of the international community in Japan through the active participation of its members. The Society maintains close ties with its independent counterpart in Switzerland, which operates under the name of the Swiss-Japanese Society.
Leadership and Governance
The Japan Swiss Society is guided by a Board of Directors made up equally of Japanese and Swiss members, ensuring balanced representation and perspective. The Society is currently headed by President Yoshio Karita, with Honorary Presidents Tadateru Konoe and H.E. Ambassador Roger Dubach. This distinguished leadership brings together expertise from both nations, embodying the spirit of bilateral cooperation that defines the organization.
Cultural Programs and Social Events
Each year, the Japan Swiss Society sponsors numerous projects celebrating Swiss culture and facilitating meaningful connections between members. The Society’s activities include:

The Japan-Swiss Spring Ball, organized in collaboration with the Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (SCCIJ) and under the patronage of the Swiss Ambassador, represents the crown jewel of the Society’s annual calendar—a magnificent celebration that brings together aristocracy, diplomatic circles, and business leaders in an evening of elegance and cultural harmony.
A Bridge Between Nations
For seventy years, the Japan Swiss Society has served as a vital bridge between two nations that, despite their geographical distance, share remarkable similarities: mountainous terrain, limited natural resources, strong work ethics, and a commitment to precision and quality. Through its ongoing programs and events, the Society continues to nurture understanding, friendship, and collaboration between the peoples of Japan and Switzerland, ensuring that this special relationship flourishes for generations to come.
